What is the rarest cape in Minecraft?
The rarest Minecraft capes are MINECON capes, given to people who attended Mojang's conventions, and the capes made for Mojang staff. Almost none of these ever come up for sale. Among capes you can actually buy, the Minecraft Experience cape is the rarest, because it only went to people who attended a live event that opened in October 2024.
Below are 14 official capes ranked from rarest to least rare. Prices and stock were checked on the live 4D4P Shop site on October 10, 2026. Rarity is our estimate, based on how each cape was released and how often accounts with it come up for sale.

How Minecraft cape rarity works
Rarity comes down to how hard the cape was to get when it was given out. Most capes follow three rules:
- Event-only capes are the rarest. You had to attend in person. MINECON capes and the Minecraft Experience cape are the clearest examples.
- Short promo capes come next. Capes like Founder's and Follower's were only open for a limited window, often on one platform.
- Mass giveaways are the most common. Capes like Migrator, Vanilla and 15th Anniversary went to huge numbers of players, so prices stay low.
Official capes are locked to the account that received them. They cannot be moved to another account. Once a cape stops being given out, the only supply left is accounts that already have it. That is why retired capes get harder to find over time.
How to get a rare cape today
You have two ways to get a cape: redeem a cape code on your own account, or buy an account that already has the cape.
- Cape code. You keep your own account and redeem the code. This is the lower-risk option. At 4D4P Shop, codes start at $0.50 (Aurora), and the Purple Heart code is $8.00.
- Cape account. You buy a whole Full Access account with the cape on it. This is the only way to get retired capes like Founder's, Follower's or Migrator. Prices start at $9.50.
Buying an account goes against Microsoft's terms and carries risks, like the first owner trying to recover it. If you buy one, change the password, turn on two-step verification and keep the original email on the account. Keeping the original email keeps your lifetime warranty valid.

FAQ
What is the rarest cape in Minecraft?
MINECON capes and Mojang staff capes are the rarest overall. They went only to convention attendees and Mojang employees, and they almost never come up for sale. Among capes you can buy at 4D4P Shop, the Minecraft Experience cape is the rarest.
What is the most expensive Minecraft cape?
In the 4D4P list, the Minecraft Experience cape account is the most expensive at $60.00 (October 10, 2026). MINECON and staff capes are rarely sold, so there is no public price we can verify for them.
Is the Mojang Office cape a staff cape?
No. Players earned it by completing all five challenges on the Eerie Mojang Office Party event server in December 2024. It is a limited event cape, not a staff cape.
Can I still get the Founder's cape?
Not as a code. The Founder's cape came from a free skin pack on the Bedrock Marketplace, announced at MINECON Live 2019. Today the only way to get it is an account that already has it. 4D4P Shop lists one at $30.00.
Are OptiFine capes rare?
OptiFine capes are third-party capes, not official ones. Only players using OptiFine can see them, so they do not count toward official cape rarity. 4D4P Shop lists an OptiFine cape at $1.00.
